Recently, he authored the landmark bipartisan prison reform legislation, Assembly Bill 900, which will provide funds to build the expanded prison capacity required to keep dangerous criminals behind bars, while improving rehabilitation programs to help more inmates become productive citizens after paying their debt to society. Upholding the people’s trust in their government has been a top priority for Assemblyman Aghazarian throughout his career in public service. He was a member of the Joint Legislative Audit Committee that investigated the misuse of taxpayer funds by former Secretary of State Kevin Shelley. Responding to community outrage over the scandals involving former San Joaquin County Sheriff Baxter Dunn, Aghazarian wrote a new state law requiring elected officials convicted of felonies involving abuse of their office to forfeit their taxpayer-funded pensions. He also serves as Co-Chairman of the Assembly Ethics Committee, a bipartisan watchdog panel that promotes strict adherence to California’s ethics laws, and ensures lawmakers are spending tax dollars appropriately and acting in full compliance with California law. Keeping taxes low, reducing wasteful government spending and restoring government accountability to the taxpayers are Assemblyman Aghazarian’s top legislative priorities. Working with Stockton parents worried about juvenile sex offenders being placed in a local group home, Aghazarian authored legislation signed into law by Governor Schwarzenegger that will improve public notice of sex offenders being placed in group homes. A strong champion of California’s veterans, he successfully authored legislation that will enable veterans’ organizations to use disabled license plates on their vehicles when transporting disabled veterans. Honored for his leadership in working to make health care more affordable and accessible for all Californians, he was honored by the California Optometric Association as “Lawmaker of the Year.” Recognized with a 100 percent pro-jobs rating by the California Chamber of Commerce, and a 100 percent rating against higher taxes by the California Taxpayers Association, Aghazarian was honored as a “High-Tech Leader” by the American Electronics Association for his efforts to create a more jobs-friendly climate in California. He additionally serves as a member of the Assembly Natural Resources and Rules Committees. In 2006, Aghazarian served as Republican Caucus Chairman, the second-highest ranking Republican in the Assembly, assisting the Republican Leader in advancing the Republican Caucus policy agenda and achieving its political goals. Prior to his election, Aghazarian was a local businessman and attorney, contributing to the success of his family’s business, Aghazarian’s of Stockton, a local landmark for more than three decades. He was also an elected member of the Lincoln Unified School District Board of Trustees from 1998-2002, serving as president of the board for the 2001-02 year. A graduate of the University of Southern California and the University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law, Aghazarian, his wife Esther and their three sons live in Stockton.
