Relating to staffing, overtime, and other employment protections for nurses. |

Maybe at the beginning of the year most hospitals shouln't have turned away all the New Grads" because of budget issues" so managements bottom line at the end of the year looks better. If now they have to pull up their sleeves and go to work for free tocover for the staff that can't come in so be it. Maybe next time they will be nicer to their staff. - anonymous said07/30/2009
What are we to do with the patients when you can't get agency or no one voluteers to work extra and you have had two call ins on your unit or on FMLA. Ms Nelson are you going to come tak care of them? This means that the Directors, CNOs, and salaried staff will have to. That will translate into 24 hour shifts lots of overitme you don't get paid for and no one wanting to be at managment level in small hospitals. Who thought about the patients with the nurse shortage all ready causing staffing problems. Where will these nurses come from. Quality of care will decrease not increase in a lot of situations. - Shirley Peek, RN,C said06/24/2009
To know what is going on in nursing you have to be on the front line. The bedside nurse is that front line. Not the Manager, not the Director, not the CNO. Staffing isnt just about numbers. It is about people. It is about time. It is about quaility. Nurses do not go on duty day after day wanting to do the minimum to keep up. We set high standards for ouselves and it is hard to feel as though you could not meet your own expectations let alone those of your patients because there were too many and the acuity was too high.
