Rick; an average bag of salt cost $5. That's 39 cents a bag. That floor space will be reallocated to more revenue producing merchandise. At $5 for a 40 lbs bag, it takes up a disproportionate amount of space. I find your 1 million voters out of work a bit hard to swallow. If the entire water softening industry disappeared that may be true. But there are alternative softening systems that don't produce brine discharge, and for the most part folks in that industry will just start selling those systems instead. It isn't true that sewer water goes directly into the ocean. Take the Santa Clara River, for example, where most of this started. The first softener system ban in the state came about because of the rising chloride content of the treated waste water stream. That ban was followed with a ban on salt based chlorine generators for pools where the pool backwash was connected to the sewer, for the same reason; both systems were contributing to elevated chloride levels in the Santa Clara River, which was reducing crop yield as that water was used for irrigation.
The whole point of this legislation is to reduce the chloride levels of the waste water so that 1,000,000 acre feet of water can be reused by the year 2010. If you don't do this, where are you going to get that much water? Quit crying over the loss of polluting technologies that benefit the few and socialize the cost to clean them up and find other ways to soften your water.

AB2270 Will cost over 1 million California Voters and Tax Payers their jobs. Thousands of Small Water Softener and Water Conditioner Assembly Plants, Distribution Centers, Truckers, Packaging Plants, Independent Service Centers, Dealerships, and Large Water Softener Manufacturing Plants which employ over one million Californians in a California Industry that dates back to the 1950s.
You can't walk into any grocery store, Home Depot, Lowes, Costco or Hardware location without finding significant square footage of floor space dedicated to the Sale of Water Softener Salt. Millions of Dollars in Sales Tax Revenue lost just because of a few insane legislators who have grabbed control of the California State Legislature.
Just imagine 1 million California taxpayers stopping paying payroll tax and start collecting unemployment, just because a few Democrats decided to attack a major California Industry (all based on the lie that most water softeners send salt to the soil). In fact most major cities sewer water goes right to the ocean where the salt came from. The perfect environmental circle.
