Bill Summary for HB1348 / *SB1514

Present Tennessee law generally classifies hospital records as confidential. Also, federal laws, such as the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 ("HIPPA"), generally require that medical records be kept confidential.

This bill authorizes hospitals to disclose the immigration status of a patient upon request so long as none of the patient's identifying health information is disclosed and the disclosure does not violate federal law.
